The Mental Health Toll of Being an Emotional Dump Yard
A Social Work Exploration of Informal Emotional Support Providers in Nigeria

In many communal societies, individuals often assume informal emotional support roles, prioritizing others’ psychological needs over their own. While this practice strengthens social cohesion, it also carries significant mental health risks, particularly when individuals become consistent recipients of unreciprocated emotional unloading, a phenomenon known as emotional dumping. Although research on emotional labor and compassion fatigue has expanded, limited attention has been given to informal emotional support providers outside institutional care systems, especially in low-resource contexts such as Nigeria. This study explored the emotional burden and coping strategies of these individuals, examining how cultural expectations, social roles, and inadequate access to mental health resources intensify psychological strain. Using a qualitative design, 22 in-depth interviews were conducted with informal emotional supporters in Enugu East Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria. Thematic analysis revealed pervasive emotional exhaustion, burnout, and symptoms of compassion fatigue, largely influenced by one-sided emotional exchanges and cultural norms that discourage vulnerability. Although participants reported adaptive coping methods such as journaling, mindfulness, and emotional regulation, most lacked structured guidance or professional support to sustain these practices. The findings underscore the need for culturally grounded mental health interventions and stronger social work engagement to enhance resilience and well-being among informal emotional support providers in communal contexts where emotional labor remains largely invisible.
